Soay Sheep are fantastic grass cutters!
They will work hard for you, keeping your field grass well cut, 24/7!
Our Soay flock have wonderful colours. Each one has his or her own character and very good looks :-)
They are a Native Heritage Breed, and as such do not suffer from many of the conditions that more commercial sheep do. Our Soay sheep are bucket trained, so come racing when called, and due to their individual colouring, they are easy to identify one from the other... real characters!
Soay self moult, so do not need shearing - their fleece gradually drops off andis taken by the birds for lining their nest, or collected by us to use as snail repellents around plants, or plant pot liners...
Owning Soay sheep is a wonderful journey - if you're new to sheep keeping, there's a lot to learn online, or do get in touch to discuss...
You will need a CPH number for your land. These can be obtained fairly easily online. You also need animal transport. We can help for local transport, for cost. Otherwise, again, do get in touch to discuss options.
Your field must be stock fenced - again do get in touch to discuss if you are unsure.
Soay also require a good water supply, and shade for the summer - they like to stay out in winter, so may need extra hay if the ground is covered with snow, but other than that, they are a natural, beautiful, relatively easy breed, needing regular checking as all animals do - but you will want to do that, as it's such fun to bucket train them and see how rewarding they are when they come running to munch their sheep nuts!
