Advert Description

Bought from the Barbican Antiques Market some years ago these 8 frames contain an array of Nautical, hand tied, Knots.

The Frames are made of stained wood (probably pine) and measure 20cm x 20cm x 5cm deep.

The knots are tied using 1cm thick natural rope and the ends of each rope have been whipped (in green whipping cord( to prevent fraying.

Each knot is displayed on a green felt backing with a hand written name plate held in place by brass pins.

All in all a lovely set.

The frames contain the following 8 Knots:-

Reef Knot, Thief Knot, Running Bowline, Bowline On The Bight, Slip Knot, Square Knot, Surgeons Knot and Shamrock Knot.

A bit of history for you - a Thief Knot (also known as a Granny Knot) was often used by wise old sailors to secure their kit-bags when they went up on deck duty.
As Sailors naturally tie a Reef Knot rather than a Thief knot - it gave a good indication if the kit-bag had been tampered with by an off-duty crew member.

The price is for all 8 knot pictures.

Thanks for looking
