Interesting oil painting on good quality canvas, depicting a Portrait of a Gentleman, made by a talented artist active in the late 19th century. The work, signed and dated on the lower left, depicts a middle-aged man seen in three-quarter view with a richly tailored suit, with a casual and elegant attitude. With equal sprezzatura the face catalyzes the viewer's attention, adhering to precise canons of the portraitists of that period, as revealed by the lively gaze of the black eyes with the glasses of the period, and the black hair styled in an elegant and well-composed way and by the mustache . The portrait - in all likelihood - illustrates a gentleman from high society, represented with an elegant and authoritative posture, typical of portraits of important subjects of the period, in particular between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century.
From a stylistic point of view, the canvas in question represents a profound intensity of expression which, alongside the meditative romantic character, not shy of symbolist reminiscences, and is accompanied by the cutting of the image which is completely characteristic for the setting, through the fusion of chromatic masses - with vibrant and detailed brushstrokes - giving us a visual solidity that is rarely seen in 19th century painting. The figures of this painting which is influenced by romanticism and realism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls the portraitist works of the European school. To enhance this photographic sensation, the artist uses the technique of well-detailed realism towards life, based on the perception of realities and not on the expression of his concept.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fair general condition considering the age of the painting; the pictorial surface shows a patina varnish. The measurements of the oval-shaped canvas are cm. 105 x 79. The work is unframed. The painting comes from the purchase at an Italian auction house and is therefore accompanied by a certificate of legitimate origin.
