Splendid engraved allegorical title page and 38 superb illustrations, engraved on copper, in the text.

Second edition of this magnificent book, one of the most successful examples of seventeenth-century Italian theater publishing. Originally published in 1613, it is here substantially reprinted with minor variations. Salvioli considers it "the composition that can be called the dramatic masterpiece of the seventeenth century"; the text was a primary source of inspiration for Milton's Paradise Lost. The finesse of the engravings is linked to the hand of Cesare Bassano, who worked on the drawings of the Lombard painter Carlo Antonio Procaccini.

Some traces of use as well as a pen scribble on the title page and on the reverse of the same sheet.
