Qualitative painting, oil on canvas
A specialist in still lifes, Cotan also cultivates religious painting, in simplified compositions that show a keen interest in the rendering of light and volume. His style, soft and fresh, equally archaic and naive, is influenced by the late mannerism of the Escurial artists and is grafted into Andalusian taste throughout the seventeenth century.

The subject of the canvas represented here is St. Joseph, unusually young as indicated in the apocryphal gospels, with a lively and reassuring expression with a still dreaming Child, just awakened from sleep.
The marvelous lily appears of pictorial excellence, the flower for which Mary chooses Joseph as her husband.

At the same time as the compensation for minimal chromatic additions, the work was recently relined and reframed. 66710133
