Francisco Bengoa Garteiz (1907-1987).

Painter from Vizcaya, born in Etxebarri on May 12th, 1907. He died on August 5th, 1987 in Barcelona.

He began painting at the age of fourteen and he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts of Bilbao.

Together with other artists, he created the Grupo Unión-Arte, which was dedicated to the organization of exhibitions. He also attended the founding of the Asociación Artística Vizcaína and of the Asociación de Acuarelistas Vascos, where he met Martínez Vázquez, Miguel Farré, Ricardo Baroja, Urbezo and where he was a disciple of Casas, Ucelay and Gustavo de Maeztu.

In 1927 he won the Silver Medal at the Certamen del Trabajo in Bilbao and in 1944 the Medal Unión-Arte. He directs Vidrieras Decorativas, from where he encourages the promotion of this technique. He made, among others the stained glass windows of the Chapel of the University of Deusto or those of Elorrio, dedicated to the Blessed Valentin de Berriochoa.

He participated in numerous exhibitions in Spain, France and Czechoslovakia. In 1949 he exhibited in Bilbao together with S. de Albi and Juan de Aróstegui and in 1951 he attended the "I Bienal Hispanoamericana de Arte" in Madrid. In 1971-72 he participated at the collective exhibition of Basque Art organized and sponsored by the City Council of Barakaldo and three years later he did so at the "XXXV Exposición colectiva de la Agrupación de Acuarelistas Vascos" in the same Municipal Exhibition Hall.

Among the exhibitions in which he showed his individual work are those held at the Galería Windsor in Bilbao in 1972 and 1974. On the occasion of the first, R. Iñurria wrote in the catalogue which was published for the occasion:

"Francisco Bengoa's painting predisposes to meditation. We have to pause in front his canvases in order to realize that his work is the result of a desire to rummage into the soul rather than on the epidermis, of the reasons for offering himself and offering a sincere vision, even if in order to try he must renounce to the temptation to resort to easy and effective techniques."

Two years later he exhibited his works at the Sala Arte in Bilbao.

In 1975 he held a solo exhibition at the Bay-Sala Gallery in Bilbao, at the Gallery Tartalo Arte, in Vitoria (1976) and again at Bay Sala in 1977 and 1985, when he showed 38 oil paintings, 10 sculptures, a large sample of sketches and a book with poetic narratives where he captured his experiences.

That same year he received a tribute at the Sociedad Bilbaína and in 1986 he moved to Barcelona, where he painted a work on the tragedy of Gernika that was showed in a exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the bombing in 1987. That same year he made his first exhibition in Barcelona with an anthological exhibition of his works at the gallery La Pinacoteca.

His work is analysed in the Gran Enciclopedia Vasca. La pintura vasca by Manuel Llano Gorostiza, Pintores Vascos by Luis Madariaga, or Pinceles de Vasconia by Mario Ángel Marrodán among others

NOTE: The painting will not be sent to Taiwan because it contains wood. 67562611
