Nicolas Amelot de la Houssaye (Orléans, 1634 - Paris, 8 December 1706) French historian, popularizer and annotator of Tacitus, Publius Cornelius Tacitus, Gaius Cornelius Tacitus (in Latin: Publius Gaius Cornelius Tacitus, classical or restituta pronunciation: circa 55 - 117 -120 circa), Roman historian, orator and senator, considered the greatest exponent of the historiographical genre of Latin literature.
CONTENTS
Nicolas Amelot de la Houssaye, his two books Tibère - Discours politiques sur Tacite (1683) and la Morale de Tacite - De la flatterie (1686) presuppose Machiavelli's Discourses: the first has moreover very close relations with the Considerations above Cornelio Tacitus of the Milanese Pio Muzio (Brescia 1623).
His judgment of a decadent Republic had drawn the wrath of the Senate of the Serenissima, which then had him jailed.

In 8°, (48), pp. 754, (26). Leather binding, worn at the hinges, parts missing at the foot and head of the spine. Title and friezes embossed in gold on the spine with raised bands. Ex libris label on the front pastedown, typographic brand engraved on the title page, handwritten numbers. Woodcut drop caps, front and end caps, author's notes in the margins. Burnished and sprayed cuts, traces of gora, widespread blooms.
