NOTES: Publication of the catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Certificate of Guarantee and Lawful Origin. Framed work (defects):

The multi-figure composition was made in large format and the people arranged in single groups, where it represents a historical scene.
The painting, remembered as an anonymous painter of the seventeenth century, has been more properly referred by the undersigned - with prudence - to the hand of the Florentine painter Pier Dandini (Florence, 1646 - 1712), pupil and collaborator of the better known Vincenzo, whose style is easily recognizable by the minute and characterized physiognomies, with a pointed profile. The very moving composition, characterized by a strong luminism and the use of pure colors, belongs to a late moment in the painter's activity, influenced by the Florentine trials of Luca Giordano.
In the painting, in fact, the peculiar character of Pier Dandini's pictorial production emerges: the unmistakable Cortonese lexicon, recognizable above all in the repertoire of ancient images, the solemnity of the poses of the figures and the luministic intensity of the colours.
Stylistic and compositional similarities can be found with the Rape of the Sabine Women sold by the Pananti Casa d'Aste Gallery (oil on canvas 146.5 x 252.5 cm, lot 153, Florence, 2021); Triumph of David sold by Pandolfini Casa d'Aste (oil on canvas 116 x 173 cm, lot 34, Florence, 2018); the coronation of Bacchus sold at Sotheby's in New York on 30 January 2016; with Solomon and the Queen of Sheba from a private collection and with The miracle of San Nicola di Bari in the church of Suffragio in San Casciano Val di Pesa. The most stringent comparisons concern the roundness of the faces, the blunt and fluid brushstrokes typical of the painter and the scenic setting, agitated and full of movement: all elements already present in the painting of Livio Mehus from which Dandini is inspired.
The work represented here narrates a historical scene inside a large hall, of a mythological nature, and animated by various figures arranged in various groups.
Pier Dandini is one of the protagonists of the stylistic development of the late Tuscan Baroque and his production includes numerous paintings of a historical and mythological nature and also a very high number of drawings, as evidenced by Ottaviano Targioni Tozzetti, biographer and collector of the painter, who owned well over 1500 sheets. The artist comes from a very large family of painters. His pictorial style, like that of his workshop, is influenced by his numerous trips to Bologna, Venice, Modena and Rome. Supported by the Medici family, including Prince Ferdinando and the Grand Duke, Pier Dandini received numerous commissions, including for churches such as San Jacopo Soprarno or San Frediano. He also created the lunettes for the San Giovannino degli Scolopi. By his hand is also the painting of St. Francis in the Roman church of Santa Maria Maggiore, to name just a few examples.
With regard to its state of conservation, the canvas is in fair general condition considering the age of the painting, the pictorial surface shows a patina paint. We note - in Wood's light - some scattered restorations and unveiling with oxidation of the pictorial surface. There are several tears, some of which are sewn, and color drops. All this does not allow us to evaluate a careful attributive evaluation. In our opinion, in fact, the canvas deserves attention with the help of the restoration. The painting may have undergone a relining in the past with the replacement of the frame. The measurements of the canvas are cm. 144 x 207. The painting is sold with a gilded frame (the measurements of the frame are approx. 159 x 222 x 6 cm, presence of defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a gift courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request cancellation of the order ."
