Interesting work in pastels on good quality paper, depicting a nude woman. The whole scene is framed frontally by the figure of the woman. The work, signed in the lower left corner, was created by the talented Tuscan painter active between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Armando Spadini (Poggio a Caiano, 1883 - Rome, 1925), where he depicts a young naked woman, lying on the sofa with an elegant and sensual posture without falling into vulgarity. The female nude is portrayed with a central shot, with the almost neutral background of the internal room. We are, in fact, in front of that type of pictorial works that portray scenes with nudes aiming to enhance female beauty always following the classic methods of past masters with the ability to idealize women's bodies to the maximum. This is an ideal born in the second half of the nineteenth century which sees the female world as much more passionate than it had been previously.
Armando Spadini's painting cannot be merely included in the realism of the late nineteenth century. It contains something more personal and particular: it is a passionate naturalism and constantly linked to the models of the Italian seventeenth century. He elaborates portraits of the family with an absolutely modern touch, always however seeking the attitude and elegance of the old masters. In love with human nature in all its facets, he interprets its most hidden attitudes with evident simplicity. Examples of this are paintings such as Mrs. Spadini, My Child, Villa Borghese, Child with Horse and Family, all presented at the 1915 Roman Secession exhibition.
The Nude of a woman seems to represent a constant reference to the compositional framework of the painting of the past, reinterpreted with a lively, vibrant colour. His sincere and pure naturalism is reflected in the importance attributed to color and light, but also in the wisdom of composition and design.
From a stylistic point of view, the pastel in question here represents a profound intensity of expression which, alongside the meditative romantic character, not shy of symbolist reminiscences, and is accompanied by the cut of the image which is completely characteristic for the setting, through the fusion of chromatic masses - with fast and vibrant drafts - giving us a visual solidity that is rarely seen in 19th century Italian painting. The figures of this work which is influenced by romanticism and impressionism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls the works of the Tuscan school of the seventeenth century.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general conditions considering the age of the work. The surface has a patina. The measurements of the work are cm. 31 x 41. The painting, of good pictorial quality, is with a lacquered frame (approx. 54 x 44 x 4 cm, defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so it is ready to display as soon as it arrives.
