Inside the archaeological area located on the Posillipo promontory stands out the monument of a character who, even if it does not belong to the famous Mantuan poet, must have had considerable prominence, because from the beginning it was a pilgrimage destination for poets and men of letters, as well as for simple admired travellers.

2) Vue des Restes d'un Théatre Antique impropriement appellé le Tombeau d'Agrippine, situé à Bauli près de Bayea

Dessiné par Chastelet
Grave par Varin

Size: 18x24cm

The monument that stands on the beach of Bacoli, originally annexed to a huge villa that was destroyed, is an exedra nymphaeum that is still partly legible, excavated for the first time in 1941 by the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri, and an essential stop for travelers from the Gran Tour, as the erudite tradition claimed it was the sepulcher of Nero's mother, Agrippina, who passed through here fleeing from the assassins sent by her son.

Taken from: Voyage Pittoresque ou Description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile by the Parisian abbot Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non (1727-91), an impressive opus in 5 volumes published in Paris from 1781 to 1786.
FIRST EDITION, A(près) P(rivilège) D(u) R(oi)

The Parisian abbot Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non was an archaeologist, draftsman, engraver and great traveller, as well as a painter. 67532905
