The American fantasy and horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) wrote his novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward in 1927, but this work was not published during his lifetime. Its first publication (in abridged form) was in 1941, in two issues of Weird Tales magazine. The first complete publication in book form was in the compilation Beyond the Wall of Sleep (Arkham House, 1943).
