This book deals for the first time with the richness of the monumental landscapes of the Rhine, from the central Alps to the North Sea delta. The borders between the countries bordering the river are erased in favor of artistic relations or the intense circulation of artists and works on both sides of its banks, from the Roman conquest to the eclecticism of the 19th century? century. After an introduction devoted to the physical and geographical structure of the Rhine regions and their turbulent history, the author retraces the history of art which unfolds along the thousand three hundred and twenty kilometres. The body of the book is devoted to an itinerary that takes us from Disentis to Delft, from Ottonian basilicas to princely residences, from Roman sculptures to Gothic reliquaries, from the Primitives of Cologne to Baroque painters. Each work of art - architecture, sculpted or painted decoration, painting, goldsmithery, tapestry - is placed in its historical context and is the subject of a synthetic presentation which reflects the most recent research. Thanks to the color illustrations, mostly unpublished, brought together in this book, an exceptionally rich panorama unfolds, giving us access to the true cultural and artistic memory of Europe.
