I have here for sale a VERY RARE book entitled AUTARKEIA BATAVIAE sive Introductio ad Medicinam Indigenam (Dutch Autarchy with an Introduction to Indigenous Medicine) by Johan van Beverwijck. It was published by Joannes Maire in Lugduni Batavorum (modern day Leiden) in 1644.

Johan Van Beverwijck was a Dutch doctor who wrote several medical books, some published by Elsevier, and contributed to medical science with some of his own experiments. Van Beverwijck was the first doctor in the Netherlands to defend the new ideas of the English physician William Harvey about the circulatory system. He also left his mark on the Dutch language by inventing words such as alvleesklier, endeldarm, sleutelbeen of slokdarm.

Beautifully bound in half calf leather on dark pink marbled hardboards. Blind stamping to edges of leather. Spine has 5 raised bands, gilt motifs and red leather title and author blocks with gilt lettering. Ownership bookplate to front endpaper. Pages in fine condition, boards in mint. 162 pages of text up to Finis, and then bulked up with 20 blank pages at the rear, 13 cm x 8 cm. 67603229
