?Book dedicated to Victor Hugo this story; work of fiction in which Jules Simon (1814-1896) in fact draws up an indictment against the death penalty.

The plot is very similar to the true or false stories used by abolitionists of all times to move their public: in Vannes, three brothers called Nayl, Yvonic, Jean-Pierre and Jean-Louis, are condemned to death for the assassination of Mr. Brossard, the mayor of Bignan, avowed opponent of the Chouans. Everything speaks against the Nayl brothers, their antecedents, their associations, their words, their silences, and even a major piece of evidence since Jean-Pierre Nayl's hat was found at the scene.
