"We possess few historical documents so precious as these Memoirs. It is an extended narration of the events of the reign of Henry IV, of the operations of the government, especially of those which Sully directed. There are interesting details of the private life of the king, that of his minister, and the intrigues of the court.
This famous edition of the Memoirs is worth by the abundance of the notes of the Abbé de l'Ecluse des Loges.
Indeed, the text of this edition has been revised and abundantly annotated by de l'Escluse des Loge who has facilitated its reading. At the end of volume 8 we find "The Supplement to Memories" which is a criticism and an attack on the edition produced by Lescluse, supposed to distort Sully's original work.
Bound in full marbled calfskin, smooth spine adorned with two pieces in red and orange morocco and rich decoration with small gilt irons.
Condition: Lack of fragments on the caps, rubbed corners and edges (some corners pierced). Verse work along the second bit in volume 8. Decorative set. Solid volumes. Fresh interiors, rare foxing, browned end papers.
