The novel depicts the murder of an old pawnbroker and her sister by Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student from St. Petersburg who fell into poverty and social exclusion with a careful analysis of the changing emotional state, mental, physical and socio-economic background of the murderer as well as the causes and consequences of the crime.

Crime and Punishment was originally published in 12 monthly installments in 1866 in the literary journal The Russian Messenger.

The first edition of 1885 in English was translated from this French text rather than from Russian.

Translation by Victor Derély, who also translated Les Possédés (1886), L'Idiot (1887) and Les Pauvres Gens (1888).

Dostoyevsky is considered one of the greatest Russian novelists, he influenced many writers and philosophers. Nietzche will say of him: “Dostoyevsky is the only person who taught me something in psychology. -
