William Sandys Wright Vaux (28 February 1818 – 21 June 1885), was a celebrated English antiquary and numismatist of the 19th century. Vaux's knowledge was large and varied, more especially in all that related to oriental antiquities. His Nineveh and Persepolis: an Historical Sketch of Ancient Assyria and Persia, with an Account of the recent Researches in those Countries (1850; 4th ed. 1855), did much to popularise the discoveries of Layard and other travellers.
Brown polished leather hardboards. Both boards are set in a gilt frame, with gilt crest on front and rear board for 'Durham School', gilt decorated spine, with 5 gilt raised bands, brown leather title block with gilt lettering. Marbled page-edges, and matching marbled endpapers. Frontboard nearly detached, scuff marks to the boards. Spine leather become quite loose. Contents generally bright and clean, slightly marked, and the occasional odd spot. Illustrated throughout with full-page plates on thick paper, and several in-text illustrations.
