Born July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk, Russia. Died on March 28, 1985 in Saint Paul de Vence. Watercolourist painter sculptor of bas-reliefs ceramist engraver. Naturalized in France since 1937. Vitebsk School of Painting. Style: Realistic - fantastic. He was brought up in the Belarusian religious tradition. 1910 He settles in Paris in the neighborhood of the hive. 1914 Returns to Russia. Cubist period. 1917 He is appointed Commissioner of Fine Arts in Vitebsk. 1920 The Window Theme. 1935 Crucifixions, the suffering of the world and loneliness. 1941 Moves to New York where he finds Léger, Mondrian, Masson. 1949 Settles in the South and discovers ceramics. 1956 Lithographs on the theme of the circus. 1959 Creates the stained glass windows for Metz Cathedral. 1964 Inauguration of the dome of the Paris Opera.
