The lot includes 9 books - 6 first editions and 3 second editions - by Simon Vestdijk (1898-1971), all published by publisher Nijgh & Van Ditmar in Rotterdam/The Hague. Apart from the essay collections Lier and Lancet 1+2, these are novels. One of the books (number 7) has a personal dedication from Vestdijk to the daughter of E.W.P. van Dam van Isselt, the director of Nijgh & Van Ditmar at the time of the publication of these books:

1 The free bird and its cages. The history of a domicile – 1958 – 312 pp. – 1st edition.
2 The Wrinkles of Esther Ornstein. The History of a Default – 1959 – 319 pp. – 1st edition.
3 The last chance. The History of a Love – 1960 – 306 pp. – 1st edition.
4-5 Winch and lancet – 1960/1961 – 168 resp. 157 pp. – 2nd edition.
6 The Final Shot – 1964 – 260 pp. – 2nd edition (appeared in the year of the 1st).
7 The Ghost and the Shadow – 1966 – 317 pp. – 1st printing. – With a dedication by Vestdijk on the flyleaf.
8 The hotelier no longer participates – 1968 – 343 pp. – 1st edition.
9 The Trial of Master Eckhart – 1969 – 136 pp. – 1st printing.

All books were bound in cloth with dust jackets.
