The Maid or France Delivered. Heroic poem.

Paris, at Augustin Courbé, 1656.

1 folio volume (36 x 24 cm), glazed calfskin (19th century binding), decorated ribbed spine, double frame decorated with triple blind fillet with gilt finial in spandrel, double gilt fillet on the border, interior gilt lace, all edges gilt on marbling, fine margins, emblazoned ex-libris, [46]-522-[12] pages. Missing the portrait of the author (as often), spot on the top cover, caps and hinges slightly rubbed. Good condition.

First edition of this famous poem about Joan of Arc.

Remarkable illustration, it is the work of two artists of great talent, the painter Claude Vignon and the engraver Abraham Bosse: a frontispiece and 12 beautiful full-page engravings. There is also 1 portrait by Robert de Nanteuil and many headers and tailpieces.

Provenance with ex-libris: Robert de Billy (1869-1953), French ambassador and close friend of Marcel Proust.
