Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Very rare mounted statue of Saint Anthony of Padua, certainly early 19th century.
Head, hands and feet in wax, also the head and hands of Jesus are in wax. As far as I can see the body is filled with paper mache at the top? and the whole rests on a wooden stick that is mounted on a wooden base. Clothing is richly finished with matte lace and brocade. The dress of Jesus is weathered at the bottom.
Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195 and is considered an important saint. He died in 1231 and is the patron saint of the Franciscans, lost objects, women and children, the poor, etc.
Considering its age, the rug is a bit dusty. Take care when removing from the packaging!
