It is to the cry of "Harloup! Harloup", on a frantic race, on a tumultuous and noisy hunt that will see the end of an old gray wolf of the forest of the Pays d'Ouche, that opens this novel by Jean de la Varende.
Author of about twenty novels, a dozen biographies, various monographs on Normandy and more than two hundred short stories, La Varende (1887 - Paris, 1959) was mainly concerned with the evocation of the Norman terroir with its country priests, peasants and hobereaux, while expressing his nostalgia for the Ancien Régime and his passion for the sea and sailors.
