Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Facsimile (accordion) reproduction of Codex Bodley 2858, an important Mixtec pictographic manuscript, painted around 1521 at Tilantongo, one of the few pre-Hispanic codices that survived the conquest of Mexico.

Its history is unknown to us until 1605, when it appears in the catalog of Sir Thomas Bodley's collection, probably following its acquisition in 1604 by the bookseller John Bill who worked for him; it was then transferred to the Bodleian Library of the University of Oxford, after the death, in 1613, of the English collector who gave his name to this codex.

The codex is accompanied by an explanatory work by the Mexican archaeologist Alfonso Caso (1896-1970), illustrated with 6 filled-in genealogical tables.
"In the 1960s, he published his interpretations of numerous codices [...] Author of more than 200 works, he made known the past, the art and the religions of the Indigenous peoples of Mexico, in particular the Aztecs, the Mixtecs and the Zapotecs whose glyphic writing he studied."

Edition limited to 600 copies.

In wooden case. Back in brown half-sheepskin, back decorated with gilded irons, decoration imitating 18th century bindings. - Covers and bits of the case rubbed, otherwise in excellent condition.
