Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. The character depicted in the painting is not known to us, a robust cardinal depicted in a celebratory robe and portrayed with all the expressive connotations that characterize him. Certainly it is a painting destined for a curial gallery which exemplifies the psychological characteristics and the role of the high prelate. The composition is entirely taken up by the figure dressed in red, which stands out against a plain, essential background. The painter's skill shines through, above all for the expressive details of the face, resolved with full-bodied brushstrokes.
The work, which in the past was relined and applied on a frame with wedges, recalls the courtly portraiture in vogue by the Raphaelesque and Titian schools, but dates from the end of the 17th century. The same is accompanied by a coeval molded and lacquered frame. 67389635
