Large, 83 cm, magnificent circa 1920s holy statue Mary Madonna Our Lady of Lourdes.
On 11 February 1858 Bernadette Soubirous saw the first apparition of ‘a lady’, as she called it. The girl was the 14-year-old daughter of an unemployed miller. She was poor and so slow of mind that she could not even learn the answers of the Catechism by heart. On 25 February, the Lady instructed the girl to go to the well in the rock that was nearby, drink from the water and wash herself in it. The Lady also said a chapel had to be erected in her name so people could go there on a pilgrimage. When the child told the priest about it, he was very reluctant at first. He instructed the girl to ask the Lady for her name. She came back with the message that the Lady had said: "I am the Immaculate Conception." Through this answer, the pastor believed in the authenticity of the apparitions. Four years earlier, the Pope had proclaimed the dogma of Mary's Immaculate Conception. But that a simple, stupid child like Bernadette took those words in her mouth: she simply could not have thought of that herself. All in all, the apparitions repeated themselves eighteen times. The last one occurred on 16 July of that same year.
