Very valuable works for artistic and economic value, by a valid artist, which illustrates a Portrait of a Gentleman. The work, signed lower right, by the Lombard painter August Laforet (Milan, 1881 - Ghiffa, 1973), active between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, where it depicts a portrait of a middle-aged gentleman placed in the middle bust in three quarters, with classic clothing: well-tailored white shirt, dressed in a suit with dark jacket and blue tie. With equal sprezzatura the face, despite its gaze turned to the left, catalyzes the attention of the viewer, adhering to precise canons of painting of that era, represented here posing in the act of being portrayed with a carefree attitude.
From a stylistic point of view, the canvas in question represents a profound intensity of expression which, alongside the impressionistic character, through the fusion of the chromatic masses with fast and vibrant brushstrokes. The figures of this painting which is influenced by impressionism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls seventeenth-century painting such as Rembrandt.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general condition considering the age of the painting; the pictorial surface shows a dirty paint, caused by time, signs that testify to the years of work. The patina is in a fairly good state of conservation, and with the study of the magnifying glass, the thickness of the pigments and some characteristics of the pictorial layer can be observed in the pictorial surface, compatible with the painting of the time. There is – at the top in the background – a small hole with color drop. In grazing sunlight, on the other hand, the characteristics of the color applied as a body and of the trend of the brushstroke are visible, such as: relief, direction, curvature and craquelé.
The work is inserted in a contemporary frame (?) (dimensions approx. 95 x 74 x 6 cm, presence of defects). The painting - coming from the purchase of an important Italian auction house - is accompanied by a certificate of legitimate origin. Any costs for customs procedures will be borne by the recipient.
