The books are bound in full brown calf.
Volume 1 boards detached, volume 4 front board detached, the rear held by one cord only, joints cracked on volumes 2 and 3 with the boards reasonably firmly held; spines are cracked or cracking down the centre, top and bottom edges chipped, bands lacking; boards are rubbed, scuffed at corners, minor chips, minor soiling, a couple of scrapes rear board volume 3.
Owner name W J Perkins dated 1892 in pencil to the front paste downs, one other name in ink to the front end papers.
Intermittent liquid staining to volume 4, minor or reasonably minor, generally faint, chiefly to the upper and/or outer and inner margins, clipping a minor amount of text at times; faint marginal liquid staining to a run of several pages around the centre of volume 1 and to the corners of the opening few leaves, the frontispiece illustration is clipped; otherwise just very occasional and very minor spots, brown blemishes and soil marks, chiefly marginal.
The books contain a total of 32 leaves of engraved plate; a number seem to have been cropped at the lower margin but no illustration affected.
page 187/188 volume 2 has a 2 inch tear through the text, the tear is close so should be easily repairable.
A couple of paper flaws at edges.
Volume 4 is crimped throughout.
All pages tightly held.
