Just Lucas-Championnière introduced antisepsis at Cochin Hospital using very simple means: soaping of hands before operations, treatment of wounds with carbolic acid. The decline in the mortality of women in labor is spectacular: "In his department at Cochin, in 1878, the mortality was only 2 per 1000, while the same year, in the hospitals where antisepsis was not practiced, the mortality was sometimes 50 per 1000" -
