Biography
Painter, draftsman and engraver of portraits, landscapes and historical and biblical subjects. Born in Leiden, son of a miller; in 1620 after completing his studies at the Leiden Latin School he enrolled at the University of Leiden; he began a three-year apprenticeship in Leiden with a minor painter Jacob Isaacz. Swanenburgh (qv); from 1624-5 pupil of Pieter Lastman (qv), a prominent painter in Amsterdam, for about six months after which he established himself as an independent painter in Leiden and worked closely with Jan Lievens. Around 1631 he settled permanently in Amsterdam; married Saskia van Uylenburgh (qv) in 1634; in 1649 Hendrickje Stoffels enters his house as a servant and they have a daughter, Cornelia, together; 1656-8 his possessions, art collection and house were sold to pay off his creditors. 67480125
