Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Extremely rare first edition, lithographed in small numbers and intended for family members only. The book bears on the title page: "Souvenirs de famille, 1870." The title Journal des prisons is not listed until after the preface.

Cécile de Noailles (1790-1870) had expressed the wish that the Journal of the Duchess of Duras, her aunt, be reproduced for each of her grandchildren; this is the reason why one of his three daughters implemented this edition.

"Retired to their castle in Mouchy-le-Chatel (Oise), the Noailles family was arrested on August 2, 1793. They were first locked up in Beauvais prison, then in Chantilly prison, finally transferred to Paris, Collège de Plessis for the Duchess of Duras, at the Conciergerie for her parents. She was freed on October 19, 1794, but her father and mother were guillotined in July. The story of the Duchess of Duras sheds light on the state of spirit of the prisoners during the Terror. We have added three other accounts by relatives of the Noailles family relating to the execution of the Duke and Duchess" (Fierro, Bibliography of memoirs on the Revolution, 500, which does not describe this first non-commercial family edition, but only the reissue given by Plon in 1888).

The memories of the Duchess of Duras are followed by the Journal of Mme Latour, the Relation of the day of July 21 by M. Grelet, Relation of the day of July 22, 1794 [by Garrichon] and various family letters.

Beautiful copy, inside in excellent fresh condition. Covered in a contemporary binding in green half-shagreen. Back decorated with golden irons. Rubbing from use on the jaws and flat edges.
