Mateo José Buenaventura Orfila (1787-1853), originally from Menorca (Balearic Islands), studied medicine in Valencia and Barcelona, and came to Paris to perfect his skills.
He became professor of forensic medicine, then of chemistry, and dean of the faculty.
He was a member of the Academy of Medicine and correspondent of the Academy of Sciences.
Orfila is considered the founder of modern experimental toxicology. He played a considerable role as an expert before the courts.
