The many years of continuous use of Hellenbroek's Doctrine in our Dutch Church makes it unnecessary to say anything about its known content and method of execution; further remark is required which Mr. Pannebakker has brought to this new edition. In the first place he has made here and there a few changes in Words, in Arrangement of Affairs, and in Order of Treating; but these changes have only been used sparingly, and only in such cases as they could add some substantial clarity to the teaching. Of more importance is Man's work in this, in appending a kind of sub-questions, without answers, to the answered Questions of this Doctrine. Mr. Pannebakker is well aware that it is not enough for the Student to memorize the proposed Questions and Answers, so let it arrive at memory work and be based thereon; but that more practice is required to become acquainted with what is proposed. For the furtherance of this, he makes further remarks on what has been dealt with in subordinate Questions, and it is the Student's business to make himself able by practice to be able to answer these Questions, and so to show that he understands the subject under consideration. The usefulness of such a teaching has been observed for years, and from this have arisen the well-known unanswered Questions of the Professor Voetius about the Catechism, already in the 1640s and subsequently made common by the printing press; and experience has shown that the same, when well used, is a most suitable means for promoting a regular knowledge of the Doctrines of Religion. The great matter is, however, that the Questions are arranged properly, so with regard to the subject as to the susceptibility of the Pupils: and this Mr. Pannebakker has for the most part very well taken into account. His Questions run through the main ones relating to the subject, and are to some extent differentiated according to the different susceptibility, therefore also those for the more advanced are marked with a ( and the most difficult Questions with a [. See, for an example of this, next, concerning the requirement in a good work, that it be done for the Glory of God: After a preliminary question about this requirement, and the sense of the parlance of doing something for the Glory of God, the question comes from the Example of Divine Truths. ....
