Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (1866-1944) is widely regarded as the pioneer of abstract art. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and spent his childhood in Odessa (present-day Ukraine), where he graduated from the Grekov Odessa Art School. He enrolled at the University of Moscow and studied law and economics. In 1896, Kandinsky settled in Munich, where he first studied at Anton Ažbe's private school and then at the academy of fine arts. He taught at the Bauhaus School of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. After that, he left for France where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1939, he became a French citizen and produced some of his most prominent works of art. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944.
