Original Publisher's blue cloth, with sailor and waves gilded into the front board and spine, gilt decoration on edges. Title in gilt.


An attractive early first edition and first issue in book format of this classic. It is a story about Harvey Cheyne, son of a wealthy railroad magnate rescued by fishermen off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. After being thrown overboard from an ocean liner, Harvey meets the captain of the small fishing boat, Disko Troop, who refuses to take the young man back to port, but instead proposes to take him on as part of the crew. Harvey will befriends the captain's son Dan, who helps the formerly insolent millionaire develop into a hard-working, independent and honest young man.

CONDITION: Original publisher's blue cloth, some age toning, straight boards. Solid back and spine, this show some shelfwear at edges. Pristine typical opaque black end papers. Two past antique signatures on first free papers. Solid binding and clean inner content, no markings but light foxing throughout the book. Some minor wear and rubbing to the extremities, at spine ends and minor signs on a few pages. A rare finding in its first state ever published.

This first edition in book form contains 22 plates of black and white illustrations by Taber, including a frontispiece. VIII, 245 pages + 2 advertisements.
