This is one of the rare woodblock books from the "baroque" period. A true bookstore "best seller", which went through more than forty editions between 1624 (EO Antwerp) and 1843 and was translated into all the languages of Europe. It exerted a considerable influence on the different forms of spirituality in the 17th and 18th centuries (particularly on the quietism of Madame de Guyon, who wrote a commentary on it). Chateaulain 84; Landwehr, Low Countries, 239.

Herman Hugo, in Latin Hermannus Hugo, born May 9, 1588 in Brussels and died September 12, 1629 in Rheinberg, (Rhineland-Westphalia, Germany) was a Jesuit priest from the southern Netherlands, Latin poet-writer and military chaplain of the troops Spanish Imperials.
His masterpiece came off the press in Antwerp in 1624: Pia desideria. Emblematis elegiis et affectibus SS. Patrum illustrata. His Pia desideria are written in Latin verse and comprise three books. (Book I) Gemitus animae poenitentis. (Book II): Vota animae sanctae. (book III): Suspiria animae amantis. They are long paraphrases in elegiac verse of various passages of Holy Scripture and of the Fathers of the Church written with a poetic pen. This work, whose subject is the soul in search of holiness, is one of the most popular of the emblematic literature of the Baroque period.
