View of the Arch of Gallienus. In the foreground, the monumental arch, marked by the passage of time and by vegetation. On the left, a classical architecture with a large door. On the right, some small houses and a long wall which escapes along the perspective beyond the arch. Numerous wayfarers populate the scene. Title and plate signature in the lower margin. Roman edition watermark with lily. Complete sheet of 20x27cm, stroke 13x18cm.

AUTHOR and WORK

GB Piranesi (1720-1778) architect, engraver and antiquarian. Born in the dominions of Venice, he trained with Wagner and then with Vasi in Rome. Key figure of Neoclassicism, considered one of the greatest engravers and landscape painters of all time.

Panel from "Varie Vedute di Roma (...)", published between 1745 and 1750 by Fausto Amidei. The early work will initiate Piranesi to great European fame.

CONDITION REPORT

Intact untrimmed sheet with partial watermark (see photo against the light). Excellent conditions, scattered browning visible against the light on the reverse. Medium weight laid paper.
