HUNEBELLE & COGNEVILLE
A gorgeous French 1930 art deco table lamp in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding a small sphere in frosted and partly hand polished molded-pressed glass by la maison Hunebelle. A beautiful model which exists in two sizes. 15 and 20 cm diameter. Both sizes exist as vase with a flat bottom. And as lamp shade which is a much harder find than the vases. The model is called 'Prismes' in the old Hunebelle product catalogs. Hunebelle issued flush mounts and table lamps with the prism globe. I show some pictures of the 1929 Hunebelle catalog issued in English. The Prisms model was designed by Roger Cognéville for André Hunebelle. And is both Cognéville and Hunebelle signed. Although the signatures are vague.

The table lamp has a height of 20,3 cm (8 inches). And the shade has a diameter of some 15 cm. It is in excellent condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the base. And the lamp is rewired with twisted cloth covered cord an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug. For European countries I will place a E14 socket.

A brief introduction to Hunebelle (1896-1985).
André shortly studied mathematics. He became interested in glassware in 1925. And first showed his work to the public at the 1927 'Salon des artistes décorateurs'. Soon after he opened his first shop at 42 rue de la Boétie for which Roger Cognéville designed its store front (see last picture). A second shop at 11 rue Meslay was followed by a third much larger one at 2 Ave Victor Emmanuel III. Many of the pieces were designed by Hunebelle. But he also collaborated with the sculptor and designer Roger Cognéville (1903-1965). Cognéville created numerous models for Hunebelle. These are signed with both signatures. The molds for the vases and scarce lamp shades were made by la maison Étienne Franckhauser. A highly respected specialist who made molds for Lalique Sabino Simonet frères Etling and many others. And the glassware was produced by the 'Cristallerie Choisy-le-Roi'. Around 1938 Hunebelle closed his shops and 1941 onwards he worked in cinema. A successful second career. He for instance produced the famous Fantômas series.
