Jan de Boer was not necessarily born to become a painter. In fact, he should have followed in his father's footsteps, who had a career as captain on a sailing freighter. But he soon discovered that his passion lay in making paintings. De Boer was self-taught, he mastered the profession entirely by himself. He painted and drew many still lifes, including forest soils with mushrooms, but he became really famous for his deep-sea flora. He also made portraits, often of women.

De Boer was active in Amsterdam for most of his working life. Between 1893 and 1894 he lived and worked in the capital, after which he spent a year in Zutphen in 1895 before returning to Amsterdam for a longer period of time. He only spent part of 1907 in Hilversum and in his latter days he also lived in a house in the Veluwe.

On his sixtieth birthday in 1937, Jan de Boer received the Great Silver Medal for Arts and Sciences, presented by Queen Wilhelmina. In addition, he was officier de l'Academie des Beaux Arts. Jan de Boer held various official positions during his life. For example, he was on the board of Arti et Amicitiae and he was chairman of the Rembrandt Society (the later Rembrandt Association). 67588755
