In September 1646, Father Michael was appointed lecturer in philosophy at the Carmelites in Ghent. There he met Maria Petyt (1623-1677), who had lived as a tertiary of Carmel since 1643. He developed a deep spiritual friendship with her. In January 1648 their ways parted for the time being, because Michael received an appointment as professor of philosophy and prefect of students at the Carmel in Antwerp. Before he left Ghent, he asked Maria Petyt to transcribe her notes of their conversations, so that he could use them as a spiritual guide to the friars. He also agreed with her that she would write to him several times a year about her spiritual life. During the Provincial Chapter of the Carmelites in 1649, Michael was elected novice master and subprior in Leuven. Together with Daniel a Virgine Maria, who would found the Carmel of Boxmeer in 1652, he was also instructed to recruit postulants. When the novitiate was moved from Leuven to Mechelen in 1650, Mechelen became the city where Michael spent most of his later life 67435835
