Bilingual Greek-Latin edition of the Manual of Epictetus, with the Latin text next to the original. Engraved title.
The Manual of Epictetus (???e???d??? ?p??t?t??, Enkheiridion Epiktetou in ancient Greek, "enkheiridion" designating "what one keeps on hand"), sometimes simply called The Manual, is a work compiled by Arrian. Probably first published around the year 125, it is a short book summarizing the doctrine of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus. Contrary to the usual works of philosophy, the Manual does not contain any theoretical in-depth study, but sets out to define practical examples taken from daily life, in order to illustrate the application of the principles of Stoic wisdom in everyone's life.
The Manual is one of the main texts of the Stoic doctrine that has come down to us, along with those of Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, the majority of the corpus of the doctrine having been lost.
