Interesting oil painting on good quality canvas, depicting a Portrait of a woman, made by the talented French painter active between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Paul François Quinsac (Bordeux, France, 1858 - 1929). The work, signed and dated, depicts a middle-aged woman in a half-bust and three-quarter view with a rich and highly tailored dress, made in a light-colored fabric with two roses on her chest, carried with casual elegance . With equal contempt, the face catalyzes the viewer's attention, adhering to precise canons of beauty of that period - of the French school of the early twentieth century - as revealed by the lively gaze of the black eyes, and the black hair styled in an elegant and well-composed way. The portrait - in all likelihood - illustrates a noblewoman from high society, represented with an elegant and authoritative posture, typical of portraits of important subjects of the period, in particular between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Paul François Quinsac was a painter of the French school known as Academic art, a specialist in mythological and allegorical subjects, figures and landscapes. He studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme and later became a professor at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts (École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux (fr)). From 1880 he exhibited regularly at the Hall of French Artists of which he became a member in 1887. He received an honorable mention at the 1884 exhibition, a third class medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, as well as a travel grant. He was made Chevalier de la légion d'Honneur in 1903.
In the present work, Quinsac represents one of the popular interests of the time: the depiction of elegantly dressed women. Representatives of the carefree and indulgent era of the Belle Epoque, the canvas in question represents a profound intensity of expression which, alongside the meditative romantic character, not shy of symbolist reminiscences, and is accompanied by the cut of the image which is completely characteristic for the setting, through the fusion of the chromatic masses - with vibrant and detailed brushstrokes - giving us a visual solidity that is rarely seen in 19th century Italian painting. The figures of this painting which is influenced by romanticism and realism but which is also declined with an entirely subjective pleasure for that past which recalls the portraitist works of the Italian school. To enhance this photographic sensation, the artist uses the technique of well-detailed realism towards the truth, based on the perception of realities and not on the expression of his concept.
With regard to its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general condition considering the age of the painting, the pictorial surface has a patina. In Wood's light, small points of restoration can be seen scattered on the background and above the figure, and some slight unveiling, however nothing really relevant. There are no serious conservative problems. The measurements of the canvas are cm. 45 x 58. The painting is sold with a beautiful gilded wooden frame (frame size approx. 59 x 73 x 6 cm). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a gift courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request cancellation of the order ."
