First edition of the Almanac of the Muses published under the Consulate of Napoleon I in 1801.

Prestigious provenance from the library of Prince Talleyrand-Périgord with the ex-libris from the Library of the Château de Valençay. The latter was purchased in 1805 by Talleyrand at the request of Napoleon.

Famous poetic almanac founded in 1765 by Sautreau de Marsy. This volume contains texts by Delille, Perny, Nogaret etc.

With an engraved title-frontispiece.

Contemporary binding, Empire style, in full green glazed calfskin, smooth spine decorated with gilt irons.
Solid volume, faded leather, uncovered head cover, rubbed covers, damaged corners (blunt). Interior well preserved, fresh and clean.

Almanacs enjoyed a huge vogue from the second half of the 18th century. The objective of the Almanac of the Muses was to do better than what seemed then by offering the readership a critical selection of recent poetry, with critical notes and information on current poetry. During the Revolution, La Marseillaise appeared there in 1793 as well as verses from Sade to Marat in 1794.
