Rare first edition of this treatise on linguistics attributed to the pedagogue C-F Lizarde de Radonvilliers, in which the author favors the practice of spoken language rather than grammatical exercises.

De Radonvilliers is considered one of the first precursors of the global method of learning to read and of speed reading methods.
Attractive copy established in a fine contemporary binding in full glazed and marbled calfskin, smooth spine adorned with a title label in morocco, and a decoration of flowered boxes stamped in gold.
CONDITION: Copy in very good condition, apart from minor rubbing and slightly bumped corners, binding in very good condition. Fresh and clean interior.
Radonvilliers taught foreign languages in several Jesuit colleges before leaving his order in 1742 to become secretary to the French ambassador in Rome. He was then chaplain to the king and under-preceptor of the children of Louis XV, which led to him being elected a member of the French Academy in 1763 following the death of Marivaux. In 1774, Louis XVI, his former pupil, appointed him Councilor of State. He is the author of a method of learning languages, De la Manière d’enseignement les langues, published in 1768, in which he favors the practice of the spoken language rather than grammatical exercises.
