Théodore de Banville 1823-1891 poet, playwright
and French drama critic. Famous for the funambulesque Odes and the Exiles, he is nicknamed "the poet of happiness". Friend of Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire and Théophile Gautier, he was considered during his lifetime as one of the most eminent poets of his time. He notably discovered the budding talent of Arthur Rimbaud. Théodore de Banville unites in his work romanticism and parnassus, of which he was one of the precursors. He professed an exclusive love of beauty and the universal clarity of the poetic act, opposing both realistic poetry and the degeneration of romanticism, against which he affirmed his faith in the purity of artistic creation.
