Beautiful bound copy of the monumental History of France by Michelet in 19/19 volumes covering the period from Antiquity to 1789, the year of the French Revolution.
In the preface to volume 19 Michelet writes:
The History of France is over. I put my life into it. - I regret nothing. Started in 1830, it finally ends (1867)...."
New undated edition with revised and enlarged mention, follows the edition by Marpon and Flammarion of 1879 partly original
19 volumes covered in very good bindings in brown half-shagreen, ribbed spine adorned with the title, volume number and a repeated gilt fleuron.

She had annals and not a history. “At the end of his life, in a new preface to his monumental History of France, Jules Michelet quite simply affirms that before him the history of France did not exist! It would have been until then only the chronological succession of events. However, true history, according to J. Michelet, presupposes a global understanding, an overview that brings together the entire past of peoples in a vast epic. In his Introduction to Universal History, written in 1831, he envisages all of human history as a Promethean struggle towards human freedom: the one that men have always waged to tear themselves away from the weight of natural constraints and false beliefs.

Nice copy in good condition. Strong bindings, decorative set. Leather in good condition has slight friction. Clean interiors, browned paper without gravity.
