Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. This particularly beautiful antique baker's shelf "Omnibus" comes from the estate of my grandfather E.G. Stokvis (1880-1964), antique dealer in Hoorn (NH) and Veere (Zeeland).

The plank dates from the 2nd half of the 19th century and comes from West Friesland.

Depicted is an omnibus drawn by two horses, the coachman sits on the box and on the back of the wagon is the palfrenier, with "8" on his cap. In the car one sees 8 passengers, apparently 4 couples. The car says "OMNIBUS"

Such planks were often cut from waste wood, and so were sometimes imperfect in shape. This shelf has a beveled corner at the back. 67415125
