§ 4 vols, 4to (242x183); Vol. 1: [8], lxxxviii, [4], 601, [1] pages, 1 folding engraved plates; Vol. 2: [4], 564 pages, 1 engraved table; Vol. 3: [4], 486 pages; Vol. 4: [8], 342, [2] pages. Engraved printer’s device on title pages, engraved frontispiece (portrait of Galileo by Zucchi), folding engraved plate and many woodcut diagrams and illustrations, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials; title page of the first volume printed in red and black. Slightly later half-vellum. Very fine copy.

FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF GALILEO'S WORKS the third overall, the first to include the Dialogo sopra i Due Massimi Sistemi del Mondo, unpublished in the previous editions because in the Index of forbidden books. Galileo’s works were previously published in two volumes in 1656 and in three volumes in 1718. This edition is edited and annotated by the astronomer Giuseppe Toaldo (1719-1797; he was professor of astronomy in Padua) and it is “... much more complete and orderly than the previous two. The unpublished works contained in this edition are:: ... Trattato del modo di misurare con la vista ... Ventitre lettere a diversi, delle quali sedici al micanzio e tre al Gualdo ... Problemi vari e pensieri vari ... Dialogo sopra i Due Massimi Sistemi del Mondo. It is preceded by the following warning: “This very famous dialogue printed many times in secret is finally released for free public use with the proper licenses. ...” ...” (Riccardi, translated).
