There was a time when the F1 world champion's car was relegated to the lower cadet division and roundly defeated by the competition: younger, spryer and more befitting single-seaters.
All this was not happening a century ago but in 1985, within an unusual and entirely new background, undoubtedly worth remembering.

By the end of 1983, the F1 motor pool is under decommissioning, and people are figuring out an intelligent way to redeploy all resources.
Nothing seems better than dismissing the old F2 series and introducing a novel category: the F3000, the backbone of the brand-new cadet division.

Although 11 races were planned for the 1985 European season of Formula 3000, 10 only were held in actual fact. A total of 14 teams and 33 pilots joined the competition, which is the debut of this glorious category.

Thanks to its excellent balance, the March 85B was the car to beat during the inaugural season of F3000, which Christian Danner won while driving a privately-registered model.
