These are reissues, shortly after the originals, of Necker's 4 best-selling texts at the time, grouped into 6 volumes. under the label "Complete Works of Necker". Very rare.
With a portrait of the author engraved by Duhamel on the frontispiece of the first volume. Portrait of Colbert in volume 6, 2 folding tables, in volumes 1 and 4. The first three volumes contain his famous treatise on the Administration of Finance.
Uniform bindings. Full marbled sheepskin, smooth decorated spine, compartmentalized gilt fleurons, title/volume labels. Triple gilt fillet framing the boards. Casters on the cups. Speckled slices.
Condition: Small lack of fragments on certain caps and title piece of volume 6, rubbing from use, pierced corners. Solid volumes. Fresh interiors, browned and pitted endpapers, missing the title page of volume 6 (Memory on the India company). Good overall condition.
In 1781, Necker was forced to resign from his position as Comptroller General of Finances following maneuvers to discredit him in the mind of the king. His retirement was considered a public calamity and several sovereigns offered him the direction of their finances. Necker refused and then composed his famous treatise on the Administration of Finances.
