In this painting it is a 'farm' covered wagon that is depicted.

This is led by a coachman, who has however dismounted, to try to tame the two horsestowed. The chariot is in fact about to get on a raft, which should take it to the shoreopposite of the river. However the horses seem afraid at the sight of the stream, and they don't seem towanting to follow the orders of their guide. Further back is a group of travellers, one of whom is ain turn on horseback, which moves away and which was probably transported across its own river
from the now stationary raft.

The romantic theme of travel as a metaphor for life - a chariot - is clear in terms of contentarrives, some wayfarers leave, the boatman points the oar to stop the raft -, to which he refers
even the placid flow of the river (and one thinks of the atmospheres of Hölderlin's poems). Theclouds gathering in the sky on the right evoke the transience of the moment represented, such asif everything, starting from the climate, could change at any moment. So the painting is
a snapshot of daily life, and as such maintains an emotional and poignant character thatit fascinates our eyes, even almost two centuries after its creation.

On the right side, just below the crag of the bank, the inscription in italics “Ronzoni P” appears: siit is the usual signature of the painter Pietro Maria Ronzoni, born in Sedrina, on the course of the riverBrembo, in 1781 and lived mainly in the city of Bergamo until 1862
